Kumba City Mayor, Health Leaders Confront Illegal Drug Sales at District Hospital Evaluation Meeting

The City Mayor of Kumba, Gregory Mewanu while chairing the 1st evaluation meeting of the management committee of the Kumba District Hospital expressed worries over the illegal sales of drugs across the town.

The meeting that took place on the afternoon of Thursday May 30, saw the coming together of various health stakeholders from the Kumba District Hospital.

The City Mayor in the course of the meeting lamented the devastating repercussions of purchasing drugs by the roadside and other unauthorized “medical” sale points.

He noted that not only are these drugs poorly conserved, they are poorly manufactured and are therefore highly detrimental to the human system.

While presenting his speech, the Director of the hospital, Dr Eko Alain revealed that purchasing drugs from illegal sale points has led to a significant number of deaths in the Municipality.

Brainstorming on the phenomenon, they evoked the need for a control whose main target will be to identify the various places were these drugs are sold illegally.

It was also observed in the meeting that the use of treated nets by traders to protect their products had witnessed a significant drop thanks to drastic measures put in place by the City Mayor.

The creation of an offloading spot on market days was equally arrived at, to reduce congestion on the street leading to the entrance of the Kumba District Hospital, thereby easing access to the medical facility for both patients, visitors, and staff.
